Our Philosophy
At Paradox Training Center, we believe Jiu-Jitsu is more than a sport—it’s a journey of self-awareness, self-knowledge, and growth. Our philosophy is rooted in the idea that true strength is gentle, deliberate, and grounded in humility and respect.
We honor the core principles of Jiu-Jitsu—fairness, humility, and strategy—while evolving to meet the needs of our members. Whether you’re here to become a champion on the mats, improve your fitness, or find a supportive community, Paradox is your place to thrive.
We reject the ego-driven mindset that sometimes plagues martial arts. At Paradox, black belts train alongside white belts as part of a shared commitment to growth, connection, and mutual respect. Every roll is an opportunity to learn, teach, and build a stronger community together.
We’re also deeply committed to wellness. Training hard is essential, but recovery is just as important. That’s why we’ve built a space where you can push your limits and recharge your body and mind—whether through Jiu-Jitsu, the sauna, the cold plunge, or simply connecting with others who share your drive.
At Paradox, we aim to create champions—not just in competition, but in life.
Challenge yourself, discover your potential, and become the highest version of yourself (and maybe even surprise yourself with a few ninja moves along the way).
Our Values
1. Egalitarian Training Environment:
We don’t believe in traditional hierarchies. Everyone trains with everyone because iron sharpens iron, no matter who’s wearing it (or how many stripes are on it).
2. Innovation and Open-Mindedness:
If it works, we honor it. If it’s clever, we celebrate it. And if it’s a little weird but effective, we might just roll with it. • Holistic Wellness Integration: Wellness isn’t just an afterthought here—it’s part of the plan. Whether you’re sweating it out in the sauna or braving the cold plunge, we’ve got the tools to keep you feeling (and looking) like a champion.
3. Community-Centric Approach:
Training alone is fine, but let’s be honest— building a supportive crew of training partners makes the journey a whole lot better. Here, we grow stronger together, one roll at a time.
4. Bringing the Fun:
Training is serious business—but that doesn’t mean we take ourselves too seriously. We believe laughter, camaraderie, and a little bit of fun are the secret sauce to success (and they make the occasional bruises a bit more bearable).
5. Flexible Teaching Opportunities:
Got a great idea for a class? Apply to teach a class here, and we’ll help you turn your idea into something amazing.
Ed Lopez
Coach, PTC Founder
Hi, I’m Ed, founder and coach at Paradox Training Center. My Jiu-Jitsu journey began in 2004, inspired by watching Royce Gracie dominate opponents in the early days of the UFC. Seeing a smaller, skilled fighter overcome much larger and stronger opponents was a revelation—it demonstrated the power of technique, strategy, and mental focus. I was hooked.
Jiu-Jitsu has been a constant thread throughout my life, even as my career as a detective for the California Highway Patrol took precedence. In 2019, I returned to the mats, training alongside my son as he prepared for Army basic training. That experience reignited my passion for the sport and set me on the path to creating Paradox.
I’ve trained with incredible coaches and practitioners throughout my Jiu-Jitsu journey. Paradox Training Center was born out of a desire to create a space where everyone could thrive together, deepening and sharing skills without the burden of running a business—iron sharpening iron in a supportive, low-key environment.
I believe we all have something to offer, and when we share it generously, we create a community where everyone grows stronger together. That spirit of collaboration and growth is exactly what we’re striving to cultivate at Paradox.
Outside of Jiu-Jitsu, I’m a husband and a father to three amazing kids, including a married adult son whose wife has become an incredible part of our family. I’m deeply grateful for my wife, Mariah, who supports my journey and constantly inspires me to prioritize wellness and longevity. Together, we’ve built a life centered on personal growth, joy, and resilience.
At Paradox, we’re here to help you grow stronger mentally, physically, and emotionally. Whether you’re stepping onto the mats for the first time or pushing yourself to reach new heights, I’m honored to be part of your journey.
Welcome to Paradox. Let’s roll!
Everyone is welcome, come check it out!
